National Optometric Student Association (NOSA)
The National Optometric Student Association is an organization dedicated to increasing minority representation in Optometry. According to a recent newsletter from the Office of Minority Health, minorities (African American, Hispanic, Native American) make up 7% of the students in optometry schools. However, this same group makes up about 24% of the population in the United States.
NOSA at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry has found several ways to increase minority representation. NOSA reaches out to the minority community by talking to students of all levels (kindergarten to seniors in college) about the importance of Optometry in the minority community. A major problem with the field of optometry is that the youth of today know very little about a career in Optometry. NOSA also holds several vision screenings throughout the year to teach the community about the importance of their vision care. The students of NOSA at PCO offer an extensive tutoring program for its members, review of materials and a big brother/big sister program to help the underclassmen survive the rigors of the optometric requirements at PCO. Each year the organization highlights the year with an Annual Spring Awards Banquet. The banquet is to honor all NOSA members for their time and commitment, outstanding academics, and to say congratulations and goodbye to the graduating fourth year students.
