Pictured outside the Shaftsbury clubhouse are some of this year's attendees

Pictured above outside the Shaftsbury clubhouse are some of this year’s attendees. Event organizer Dr. Dennis Lyons ’73, is third from the left in the front row.

The New Jersey American Academy of Optometry offered a four day continuing education and golf combination in early April.

Organized by Dr. Dennis Lyons ’73, the event was held in Myrtle Beach SC from April 2 through April 5. Those who attended received a total of 16 hours of COPE continuing education in three mornings and three afternoons of golf.

Part of the proceeds from this and other events sponsored by the NJAAO help fund the two NJAAO scholarships at the College. The NJ Academy, as it is known, has generously donated $10,000 each year for the past six years.

DR. VERMA GOES TO WASHINGTON

In March, PCO Assistant Professor, Dr. Satya Verma, attended the National Council on Aging's (NCOA) annual conference in Washington DC.

A member of the Board of the NCOA and Chairman of its Public Policy Committee, Dr. Verma met with legislative staff from U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) and U.S. Representative Allyson Schwartz's (D-PA) offices.

Under discussion was support for two bills: HR-1983, the Optometric Equity in Medicaid Act and HR - 1884, which will end the exclusion of optometrists in the National Health Service Corps.

As part of Capitol Hill Day activities sponsored by the National Council on Aging, Dr. Verma also discussed issues affecting older adults and aging baby boomers, an area in which he has earned a national reputation.
